COMMUNITY Building Community Th e Campaign for Funding Wheeler Library's Restoration & Renovation HONORING the Past. EMBRACING the Future. Wheeler Library occupies a unique place in North Stonington, serving as a critical community partner. MAKE A GIFT TO OUR PROJECT DOWNLOAD A PLEDGE FORM This campaign envisions Wheeler Library’s future. Repairing our aging infrastructure, providing accessibility for all, creating minimal climate impact and providing more functional spaces are all necessary to continue and expand our cultural, community and educational offerings. FAQs Wheeler Library’s Restoration & Renovation Project OUR CHALLENGES The lack of a fully climate-controlled interior impedes both service and usage. Air circulation on all levels is in critical need of improved handling. Major infrastructure including drainage surrounding the building, mechanical systems, the boiler, and current heating and cooling components are all in dire need of replacement due to age and lack of replacement parts. (See water damage, improper drainage & boiler pictures below). As the library is currently configured, space is not used to its fullest potential by any measure. Our community needs meeting space as well as private spaces for study or quiet conversation. There is a lack of planned space for gathering and socializing. Areas and parking for outdoor programming need to be improved to expand library services, sustain patron wellbeing, and attract new visitors. Advances in technology, as well as expanded educational and social roles met by the library, are limited by a facility which is now outdated. To play, press and hold the enter key. To stop, release the enter key. OUR GOALS ACCESSIBILITY : Provide a safe, accessible entrance and expanded and improved parking areas. ENERGY EFFICIENCY : Update our HVAC system with a modern and efficient system to serve the library in every season and for many decades to come. The new HVAC system will provide for ventilated airflow, more efficient heating in the winter, and air conditioning in the warmer months. IMPROVED DRAINAGE: Install a system of of underground trenches to allow water to properly drain and disperse away from the building. GATHERING SPACES : Improve the layout of the library to make it a better functioning and more welcoming space. Provide private meeting rooms, and comfortable and flexible seating, to make the library an attractive gathering place for our community. HISTORIC PRESERVATION : The trustees, library staff, and renovation committee are working with Henry Myerberg of HMA2 Architects to renovate the interior space while honoring and enhancing the original stunning architecture. Together we will ensure that Wheeler Library continues to serve future generations as an excellent library and community treasure, as it has for more than a century. - 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten | Wheeler Library
1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a program for children ages 0-5. The goal of the program is simple: Read 1,000 books before your child starts Kindergarten! Now that number may seem like a lot, but think about it... If you read one book a day to your new baby and continue on as they grow, you could have over 1,000 books read before they turn 3! If you are already well past the baby stage you can still participate. Read as many books as you can. Even if you don't make it to 1,000 books, you can still register and track your reading until your child starts kindergarten. With a generous grant from The North Stonington Education Foundation , we have incorporated the 5 practices of "Every Child Ready to Read" (Talk, Sing, Read, Write, Play) to launch our program, so participants can benefit from purposeful "gifts" that promote literacy as they work towards reading 1,000 books! HOW DOES IT WORK? Register for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and receive a starter kit which includes a reading bag , a folder with your 1st reading tracker #1-100, and a 1,000 books sticker sheet. For every 100 books read, fill out a tracking sheet and keep it in your folder. Download a 100 book tracking sheet or pick one up at the library when you need a new one. Each time you reach a 200 book milestone visit the library for a gift that celebrates "Every Child Ready to Read". 200 books= TALK: whisper phone 400 books= SING: song shaker 600 books= READ: book choice 800 books= WRITE: jumbo crayons 1,000 books= PLAY: Play-doh REGISTER NOW!
