Hike at Lantern Hill -
Oct 19th @ 10 am - Meet at Lantern Hill Trailhead
Steve Fagin, Great Outdoors columnist for The Day, will lead a hike Sunday, Oct. 19, to Lantern Hill in North Stonington, which offers one of the best views in southeastern Connecticut. If the weather is clear, hikers will be able to gaze from the 491-foot summit east to Rhode Island, south to Long Island Sound, west to Connecticut, and north into Massachusetts.
~Nearly 500 years ago, Sassacus, a Pequot sachem, was said to have perched here to watch for enemies during the Pequot War, giving way to the tribe’s name for Lantern Hill: “Sachem’s Chair.” The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation purchased Lantern Hill 1994 from U.S. Silica, the last in a long line of companies that had been mining high-grade quartz just south of Lantern Hill since 1870.
