About the event
The Chemistry & Practice of Composting with URI Master Gardener Robert Rafka
This lecture is in collabortion between the North Stonington Garden Club & Wheeler Library in a program called "A Year in the Garden". Look for a new program each month of the year!
Dr. Rafka will present “The Chemistry and Practice of Composting,” a comprehensive exploration of the scientific and practical dimensions of this time-honored process. His lecture will examine the chemical transformations that convert yard waste into humus, evaluate the risks and benefits associated with selected organic source materials, and highlight the beneficial effects of humus on soil health. Attention will also be given to strategies for maintaining humus through sound cultural practices, as well as to the inherent limits of the process. Dr. Rafka’s presentation will help attendees to deepen their understanding of composting as both a scientific phenomenon and a sustainable practice.
