  • 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten | Wheeler Library

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a program for children ages 0-5. The goal of the program is simple: Read 1,000 books before your child starts Kindergarten! Now that number may seem like a lot, but think about it... If you read one book a day to your new baby and continue on as they grow, you could have over 1,000 books read before they turn 3! If you are already well past the baby stage you can still participate. Read as many books as you can. Even if you don't make it to 1,000 books, you can still register and track your reading until your child starts kindergarten. With a generous grant from The North Stonington Education Foundation , we have incorporated the 5 practices of "Every Child Ready to Read" (Talk, Sing, Read, Write, Play) to launch our program, so participants can benefit from purposeful "gifts" that promote literacy as they work towards reading 1,000 books! HOW DOES IT WORK? Register for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and receive a starter kit which includes a reading bag , a folder with your 1st reading tracker #1-100, and a 1,000 books sticker sheet. For every 100 books read, fill out a tracking sheet and keep it in your folder. Download a 100 book tracking sheet or pick one up at the library when you need a new one. Each time you reach a 200 book milestone visit the library for a gift that celebrates "Every Child Ready to Read". 200 books= TALK: whisper phone 400 books= SING: song shaker 600 books= READ: book choice 800 books= WRITE: jumbo crayons 1,000 books= PLAY: Play-doh REGISTER NOW!
