Earth Work!

Earth Works

Join us at Wheeler Library for a six week afternoon science program for children in 1st through 5th grade. Come learn about volcanoes, earthquakes, and the geology of igneous rocks. You’ll then make your own papier mache volcano and start an igneous rock collection. A minimum of 5 students is required for the class. Register at Wheeler Library (860-535-0383) for this program. The program fee is paid at the time of registration.

Science & Math Kits

Wheeler Library Science and Math Kits are designed for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Each kit contains at least five different activities, with some activities selected for younger children and others for older children. Sixteen kits are currently available, including Magnet Magic, Dinosaur Design, Fun with Fossils, Kitchen Chemistry, Tangrams, and Counting Fun. Wheeler Library Science and Math Kits are provided through the Pfizer Groton/New London Laboratories Community Grants Program. Check one out today!

Children’s Story Times

Registration begins Monday, September 27

“Reading Together”
(For babies and toddlers ages 2 and under)

Young children and their caregivers come together for board books, puppets, nursery rhymes, felt stories, and familiar songs. Each session includes time at the end for open play.
Thursdays, October 7, 14, 21, 28, November 4, and 18

“Colors All Around Us”
(For 3 year olds)

Autumn is a time of many colors, so we will look at the colors in the world around us. There will be seasonal stories and a weekly craft that highlights a particular color of the rainbow. Three year olds and their caregivers are invited to join us for this colorful experience!

“Crazy about Pets”
(For 4, 5, and 6 year olds)

October is “Pet Safety and Awareness” month, so we will be honoring pets with our crafts, games, and story themes! There will be a dog week, a cat week, and one day devoted to horses and ponies. We will explore other pets such as hamsters, mice, and guinea pigs, and then have a week for aquatic animals like turtles, fish, lizards, and chameleons. Our last session will explore some very unusual pet options…an octopus, a penguin and even an elephant!

Time to Carve Pumpkins

Pumpkin

Bring your family or friends to Wheeler Library to carve a fall pumpkin. You can bring your favorite pumpkin or purchase one at the library. Pumpkin carving tools and stencils will available for use. Participants are invited to leave their pumpkin at the library for the Carved Pumpkin Competition on Saturday, October 23. Voting for the competition is open to all and will take place during library open hours on October 23 (10 am to 1 pm) or during the NSPTO Fall Festival that runs from 2 to 6 pm on the same day. Children must be accompanied by an adult for this library program. No registration is required – just drop by the library during pumpkin carving hours!

The Airborne Jugglers

Airborne Jugglers

Join us at Wheeler Library for a return performance by Joe Murray and Susan Kirby - The Airborne Jugglers. This terrific duo will amaze you with their juggling skills and acrobatics. This presentation is offered as part of the 2010 NSPTO Fall Festival.
Visit the library for the juggling performance and vote for your favorite carved pumpkin!

Worms and Vermicomposting

Worm

What is red, wiggles, and makes you green all over? The red wiggler earthworm! Wheeler Library presents the Worm Ladies on Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:30 pm. Find out how these amazing consuming creatures can make ‘gold’ for your garden while eating your garbage all year long. Free and appropriate for all age groups. Worms will be available for purchase so that you can start vermicomposting too! There is no registration required for this program.
