Wheeler
Library serves as the principal public library for the residents of North
Stonington. The building has a rich history. Constructed in 1900 of Westerly
granite, the Wheeler School and Library served as the town's secondary
school and public library for over forty years. The Wheeler Family financed
the building's construction, and provided an endowment which remains our
principal source of funding. Many residents of North Stonington fondly
remember their years spent in this building during its decades as a school.
Although a major renovation was undertaken in 1992, the library retains
its historic character. Two life-size marble lions remain vigilant outside
its front doors. A Board of Trustees, whose members are Thomas Eyles, William
Hescock, Thomas Downie, Joyce Elias, and Leda Stanley-Fidrych, oversee
the Library.
